Is the chatbot novelty dying?
ChatGPT has seen a dip in site traffic according to Similarweb, is the novelty of AI chatbots dying off?
Gaining one million users in just five days after launch and 100 million users by April of this year, ChatGPT is one of the most popular apps on the internet in this day and age. However, the site traffic has seen a startling drop.
In some numbers recently dropped by Similarweb ChatGPT has seen a 10.3% drop in traffic.

One must ask why this is happening, but in some ways this has a possible explanation.
There has been a shocking number of AI tools dropping in recent months. However when you examine the numbers it isn’t too shocking. With thousands of new AI tools on the market and even 200 tools coming out a week on some weeks there is going to be a drop in traffic.
ChatGPT is a very generic application it can complete a number of tasks but it can’t complete more specific tasks people need it to. With a limited knowledge of events and lack of specialization ChatGPT has a limited use.
Let’s take the example of blogging. I want to post as many blogs as I can for you guys however my time is limited. I could hire a copywriter, but that costs money which I am a little short of. The better solution would be to exploit the power of AI. However, ChatGPT’s writing ability is limited due to not being trained as an AI writer. On the other hand Cohesive an AI writing tool is amazing. It can write excellent articles that perform well.
That is but reason one.
Reason number two I believe pertains to the ability of people to access the more advanced features of ChatGPT. OpenAI released one of the most advanced AI models ever, GPT4. As of this writing though it still is only available to paid subscribers. This model has over 1 trillion parameters making it a massive model with many capabilities. However OpenAI has limited its access, but a number of tools on the market including Microsoft’s Bing chatbot have made GPT4 open to many people. With a factor like this it can hardly be a shock that OpenAI is losing traffic.
This loss is going to hit OpenAI hard, but they can recover. If they were to make GPT4 easily accessible and develop some tools to handle more specific tasks they could see a return in their traffic.
These opinions are my own. These reasons and the solution is speculation based upon a basic understanding of the AI market.
